Their story

Mary of Hungary, born in the Brussels metropolitan area in 1505, was a prominent figure in 16th-century European politics. As a Habsburg, she held significant influence through her familial connections and her own considerable abilities. She served as Consort of Hungary and Bohemia, roles that positioned her at the heart of Central European affairs during a turbulent period. Later, Mary was appointed Governor of the Spanish Netherlands and subsequently Governor of the Habsburg Netherlands, demonstrating her administrative acumen and her brother Emperor Charles V's trust in her leadership. She governed these territories for many years with notable effectiveness until her death in Cigales in 1558.
